First Edition (first printing). 8vo. 269pp. Red cloth lettered in gold at the spine, and with the publisher's motif blind-stamped to the upper board. The backstrip cloth very slightly faded, and with just a touch of wear to the corner tips and spine ends. The cloth lightly marked and chafed in places. Top edge lightly dust soiled, and with a little spotting to the fore edge. Free endpapers and a dozen preliminary and concluding leaves quite fox-spotted, with a little further spotting to occasional margins throughout. This copy from the library of Irish novelist and editor Terence de Vere White, with his signature inked to the front pastedown, alongside the neat name plate of his wife, the biographer and critic Victoria Glendinning. The inked name of an earlier owner has been struck-through. A good copy, no dust wrapper. The author's uncommon and highly acclaimed second book, which documents the lives of Birmingham factory workers during the interwar years.
