First edition in this format. 356 pages + 16 colour illustrated plates. The book is quite firmly bound in the publisher's dark red cloth, lettered and decorated in gilt, blue and blind, the cloth is lightly marked and the extremities are slightly bumped and rubbed. The text block is slightly foxed, marked and age toned, there is a small prize bookplate to the front endpaper, indicating that it was originally the property of a Constance M. Goodman, likely Constance Margaret Goodman (1914-2000), given that she was born and died in Lancashire, and the prize plate is from a Wrightington Parish Church Sunday School. The colourfully patterned dust jacket, with one of the Tarrant illustrations to the front panel, is the original, it is somewhat marked and rubbed, with small chips and short closed tears to the edges, also a longer split along half the front flap fold, to the reverse are some small repairs with thin paper archival tape. A pleasingly hefty and well-produced illustrated edition, which is quite uncommon in the cloth, and rarely seen in the original dust jacket.
