FIRST EDITION, pp. xii, 320, crown 8vo, original fuchsia cloth, backstrip lettered in gilt with very slight lean to spine, top edge pink, very faint partial browning to inner margin of free endpapers, dustjacket with designs by Margaret Macadam to the front and backstrip panels, faintly browned overall with the backstrip panel slightly more so, a couple of little nicks, a sliver of surface abrasion at head of rear panel, very good. The author's first novel, following the publication of his journal, 'A Tenement in Soho' - an account of a life afflicted by both progressive muscular atrophy and penury. This book is also a portrait of poverty - in respect of which, Beverley Nichols might seem an odd choice of individual to testify to its verisimilitude, but his Foreword describes his own, more touristic, residence in a tenement, in order to understand (and write about) 'the life of the poorest'. Scarce. The dustjacket is a striking design by Margaret Macadam, evincing the influence of E. McKnight Kauffer.
