This was a famous case in which Harris, a medical student, murdered his wife with poisoned sleeping pills. He was convicted and executed in the electric chair at Sing Sing Prison. Harris's mother, who believed her son to be innocent, was the author of several edifying books for children and young women published under the pen-name Hope Ledyard.
