First edition of Buchner's voyage across the Pacific Ocean in 1875 while serving as a ship's doctor for the Norddeutscher Lloyd, a German shipping company. He provides observations on the landscapes of the Pacific islands and local cultures, as well as descriptions of the Chinese quarter of San Francisco, Mormonism in Salt Lake City, and the prairies. Buchner (1846-1921) a German physician, ethnographer, and later museum conservator, sailed to various islands in the South Pacific, including New Zealand and other Polynesian and Melanesian regions, before continuing on to North America and concluding his journey in England. He arrived in Honolulu on 16 August, 1876. "Five days after his arrival Buchner continued to the island of Hawaii to view the volcano, visiting Puna and Kapoho (where he met Captain Eldert and family) and Hilo" (Forbes). Forbes 3206. Near-contemporary marbled boards, rebacked and recornered to style, raised bands on spine, compartments richly decorated in gilt, brown label, patterned endpapers, marbled edges, blue silk bookmarker. Pencil inscription dated 1972 to verso of front free endpaper. Gilt on spine bright, binding extremities rubbed and worn, some abrasions to covers. A very good copy.
