Glocester: Printed by R. Raikes; and sold by J.F. and C. Rivington, St. Paul's Church-Yard, and J. Evans, Pater-Noster-Row, London, 1789. Twenty-Second Edition. 12mo (16.5cm); bound in later (1826) twine-stitched manuscript waste (see below); v,[1],222,[2]pp. (collated complete). Binding and a few leaves a bit soiled and chipped along margins without loss of text, contemporary ownership signature of a Thos. Ralph to final blank verso, else Very Good and sound. Publisher's advertisements printed on p. [vi]. A popular bilingual school edition of Erasmus with the Latin and English text side by side in two columns per page. The ESTC notes that this is not a re-issue of Raikes's 21st edition. This copy wonderfully bound in John Pepperday's manuscript waste paper from his schoolboy copybook. The upper cover repeats the phrase "Youth is the proper season for acquiring education" (signed John Pepperday at the bottom of the leaf now serving as the rear cover's fore-edge). The inside wrappers repeat the phrase "Avoid Punishment" over and over again, concluding with the date Tuesday Febry. 21st, 1826. ESTC 137874.
