His diaries have become a major source of information about the London art world of the time.Farington was educated in Manchester, and went to London in 1763 to train in the studio of Welsh painter Richard Wilson, where he won premiums for landscape drawing from the Society of Artists.The artist suffered a breakdown after the death of his wife, and died himself on a visit to his brother in Lancashire, where he fell down steps at Didsbury Church.
