A late 16th-century printing of the third and final volume of Locorum Medicinae Communium, one of the major Renaissance efforts to systematize classical medical knowledge. Written by Francisco Valleriola (1524â "1560), a Valencian physician and scholar of Hippocrates and Galen, the work presents a compendium of medical â commonplaces,â or loci communes, organized thematically across anatomy, physiology, pathology, and therapeutics. The Liber Tertius treats chiefly the crises, symptoms, and critical days of disease, blending Galenic doctrine with humanistic interpretation. Drawing upon Hippocratesâ Aphorisms and Galenâ s De Crisis, Valleriolaâ s method exemplifies the intellectual rigor of late Renaissance medicineâ "an era still rooted in classical texts but increasingly observational and philosophical in tone. Printed in clear Roman type with marginal citations and decorative headpieces, this volume demonstrates the sober elegance typical of medical imprints from Lyon or Geneva at the end of the 16th century. Each page is densely annotated in Latin, with aphoristic references and structured scholia. Though sometimes issued as part of a multi-volume set, the Liber Tertius circulated independently as a complete treatment of disease progression and therapy. This copy stands as an authentic representation of Renaissance medical humanismâ "a work bridging scholastic and empirical approaches just prior to the scientific revolution. Condition: Text block crisp and complete, light scattered foxing and mild age toning, a few marginal annotations in early hand. Binding tight and sound. Overall- good. Contemporary full vellum hardcover, hand-lettered spine (â F. VALLERIOLA / Locorum Medicinæ Communium / Lib. 3â ). Sewn on three cords, original endbands intact. Vellum shows light soiling, natural age toning, small stains and edge wear, minor losses at yapp edges, and mild darkening to spine
