Full vellum binding with six raised bands and gilt titles on the spine, top edge gilt, 10x14 inches, 238 pages. Printed on heavy laid paper with watermarks of Nash, Wilke and Hearst. Frontispiece portrait of Hearst and illustrations at the beginning of each chapter by William Wilke. Published by William Randolph Hearst in memory of his father. Very good plus condition. George Hearst (1820-1891) was an American businessman, politician and patriarch of the Hearst dynasty. He founded numerous very successful mining operations during the California Gold Rush, then went on to newspaper publishing, acquiring the San Francisco Examiner newspaper, and amassed a huge amount of land in California. His son William Randolph Hearst continued as a newspaper publisher; father and son being two of the richest and most famous Americans of their day.
