BYRON RAYMOND WHITE (June 8, 1917-April 15, 2002) was a professional football player, having played for the Pirates, later the Steelers, before being appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court by President John F. Kennedy. In this single-page, 8 1/2 x 11, TLS, March 1, 1985, White responds to writer GEORGE SULLIVAN of New York, as follows: "My jersey number with the Pirates (later the Steelers) was 24. With Detroit [Lions], it was 44. "Sincerely yours "Byron White" White had also been in the U.S. Navy in WWII and was Deputy U.S. Attorney General under Robert F. Kennedy. as a Supreme Court Justice, White was known to have been an independent and pragmatic thinker, often skeptical of expanding judicial power. While he supported some Civil Rights decisions, he dissented in the notable Roe v. Wade. GEORGE EDWARD SULLIVAN, a New York-based writer and photographer was best known for dozens of nonfiction books for children and young adults. The letter comes with the envelope addressed to Sullivan.
