Single sheet. 13 ½ x 8 inches. Part printed, filled in manuscript. Creased at folds with minor toning along the folds otherwise fine. Paper is watermarked J. Adam & co. A paper manufacturer from Salisbury, Connecticut which was established in 1787 by John Adam (1714-1802) and his son, John Adam Jr. (1755-1826). Later Docketing by Moses Hopkins to verso dated 1810. Captain Truman Wheeler (1741-1815), the purchaser, was a Connecticut native, settled in Great Barrington in the 1760's. He was a merchant, town treasurer, muster master and captain in the militia during the Revolutionary War. He also served as justice of the peace and was a representative in the General Court. Document is signed and sealed by Matthew and Sarah Cadwell, witnessed and signed by Timothy Williams and Gideon Wheeler. Docketing to verso signed by Samuel Whiting and Moses Hopkins. Samuel Whiting (1761-1832), son of Dr. William Whiting Jr. 1730-1792 (Shays's Rebellion fame), became Justice of the Peace after his father retired from the post. Moses Hopkins (1751-1838), son of Rev. Samuel Hopkins, was the longest serving registrar of Berkshire County. Gideon Wheeler (1745-1822) was the brother of the purchaser, Truman Wheeler, was also a soldier in the Revolutionary War. Mathew Cadwell (1731 - 1811), a shoemaker also served in the Continental Army. His wife, Sarah Root Cadwell (1738-1806), was the daughter of Sergeant Joshua Root Jr. 1715-1791, (named in this document). Joshua Root was also a Revolutionary War veteran and was very well acquainted with Truman Wheeler and Dr. William Whiting. [Great Barrington, Massachusetts - History]
