ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Alvin - better known as Al - Spivak devoted a lifetime to NEWS in Washington, D.C. In the 1950s and 1960s he covered the news at the U.S. Senate, including controversial Red-hunting Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy, and then the administrations of three Presidents - Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson, for International News Service (INS) and then United Press International (UPI) after INS was merged in 1958 with United Press (UP). At White House invitation in 1967 he switched to public relations, helping make the news with a presidential commission investigating racial disturbances in American cities, and then national politics. This includesd the 1968 presidential campaign of U.S. Senator Hubert H. Humphrey, and three years as PR director for the Democratic National Committee. In the 1970s he swung into industrial public relations, as director of national and international news for the General Dynamics Corporation, builder of nuclear submarines, battle tanks and aircraft including the F-16 fighter bomber. Spivak retired in 1993 at the age of 66 and now in his 90s he shares his memories." - from the rear outer cover. "This is a story that began in 1927, two years before the stock market crash that launched the Great Depression of the 1930s; then into and after World War Two and its impact on American and international society, and then far beyond from the 20th century into the 21st. This tale, though, is not that grandiose. It is mainly about one individual in those years and is being written as he heads toward his 96th birthday. This is a story of two careers. First, journalism. I began at the bottom as a teen-age copy boy at the now defunct Philadelphia Evening Bullentin. I progressed to two wire services, the International News Service (INS) and, following it merger with United Press (UP), the United Press International (UPI). Those also are long gone, after my tenure with them from 1949 to 1967. Those years were highlighted by coverage of three America Presidents - Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson - and numerous other prominent individuals, in and out of government. The second career was public rlations, and offshoot of journalism. This took me through roles with a presidential commission, the 1968 presidential campaign, three years as public affairs director of the Democratic National Committee, and 24 years with the General Dynamics Corporation. This company was a defense industry giant, building nuclear submarines, battle tanks and military aircraft including the highly successful F-16 Fighting Falcon in use by air forces of the United States, NATO nations and other U.S. allies. This also is a story of friends and family. It highlights my immigrant parents who arrived in America before or shortly after the turn of the 20th century, and my beloved wife Martha who emigrated from her native Argentina." - excerpt from the Introduction
