First edition. 12mo. [2], 91, [1]pp. No half-title otherwise collated, complete with all endpapers. In the original full tree-calf rubbed at corners. Leather split at hinges, boards holding firm with original bands. The top portion of the front board has darkened (perhaps due to fire?) Leaves toned with scattered spots of foxing. Contemporary ownership inscription of M. E. Robinson, 1787 on front pastedown. In good condition. Named after Clio, the daughter of Zeus, otherwise known as the muse of history, Ussher suggests that what is commonly recognized as graceful, agreeable, and sublime has survived since ancient times. Those principles of taste in literature and music are an emotional response that can be cultivated and improved. The book went through a number of editions well into the 19th century. The first edition remains scarce. [Aesthetics] ESTCT76095
