[Recorded music] Long-playing record. 1966 pressing, with matrices ending -1G/-1G, issued in mono with black labels printed in yellow and silver, in front-laminated flipback sleeve. 'Gramophone Co.' rim text. Cover is in excellent shape with only light handling and creases, owner name in ink to rear. Record has been carefully played, showing a few light marks, some hairlines, nothing serious. Housed in a plain paper EMI 'Patents No.' company inner sleeve. Play tested using a lightweight pickup, this runs through very well with some light background noise. No needle sticks or jumps/skips. Approaching 'ex' condition. A Collection of Beatles Oldies was the band's first official hits compilation issued in the UK, serving to satisfy EMI's demand for product during the Christmas period, since the Beatles were currently recording the album that would be Sgt. Pepper. It collects many of the band's singles to that date, all of which had never appeared on an LP in Britain. The sleeve art by David Christian captured the band's new psychedelic image, combining elements of vaudeville, retro Victoriana and the bright. bold colours then popular in London's Carnaby Street fashion boutiques. The album was deleted from the Beatles' catalogue following the reissue of their albums on compact disc in 1987. Despite a huge number of copies being pressed and sold, very few have survived in good shape given the carefree nature of the intended audience, and the quality of record players and portables that were used! Decent copies such as this are now uncommon.
