Lesser-known title by the author of the acclaimed children's books, A Little Princess & Little Lord Fauntleroy. Here, Burnett tried her hand at a children's ghost story, brought to life with the delicate watercolor illustrations of Jessie Willcox Smith. In 130 pages, with Frontispiece + 7 internal full-color plates; all pages delicately decorated around edges with green flourishes. A FIRST EDITION, first printing, from 1904, this octavo (5.75" x 8.50") has soft green cloth-covered boards, with an elaborate gilt design & lettering to front/gilt lettering to spine, gilt to top outside page edges. Though an EX-LIB copy with the usual stamps & markings in front & rear, condition is Good+: slightly cocked, mild rubbing to extremities, heaviest at corners & spine tips, with loss here. The illustrations are lovely: mildly tanned, but only 1 shows a tiny spot in the margins. A few others show a whisper of staining to a thin strip at top outer-upper corners, but you have to look close to see it! Text pages creamy white & unmarked, with a few in front showing slight tearing near spine. Front hinge starting. No DJ, as issued.
