88x140mm. Postcard. Rust mark from a paperclip (now absent) and some slight handling marks throughout. Front side depicting Robert Bridges s home, Chilswell in black and white. It is captioned, presumably by Sydney Walton of the Morning Post newspaper, in black ink: Chilswell, The Poet Laureate s Home , and Walton has also marked the margins for publication in the same pen. This postcard was sent to Robert Bridges by Walton, requesting, in another and now absent note, permissions to publish the photograph. On the verso, Robert Bridges addresses this note to Sydney Walton at 44 Gt. Russell St, London, and writes: You are welcome to use | this for your article if it | will serve your purpose. RB in back ink. Affixed is a green King George V halfpenny stamp, with the Oxford post mark. Chilswell House was built in 1907, and Robert Bridges, who was elected Poet Laureate just six years after, lived there for many years.
