[tight and unblemished, essentially as new]. Trade PB (B&W photographs, reproduced lip prints) Longtime Hollywood makeup artist Clay Campbell, active from the 1930s until the 1960s, collected hundreds of lipstick impressions and autographs from the many actresses with whom he worked. This rather odd book reproduces both the signatures and the lip prints -- the latter in black-and-white, no doubt necessary for the economics of this privately-published book, but unfortunately failing to do justice to the myriad shades of RED involved -- and couples them with brief character analyses (which seem to be based on both their handwriting, as shown by their signatures, and the lip prints themselves), a portrait or scene still of the actress, and anecdotal musings about each lady. A short (10-page) introduction talks a little bit about Campbell's career, and there's some filler at the end (including a lip print quiz!). Among the actresses represented are Marlene Dietrich, Martha Raye, Lucille Ball, Rita Hayworth, Mae West, Mary Pickford, Betty Grable, Lillian Gish, Shirley Temple and Fay Wray. The Clay Campbell Collection itself, containing hundreds of lipstick prints (on napkins, tissues, backs of envelopes, etc.), is now held by the Margaret Herrick Library of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
