Berghaus was a German geographer best known for his cartographic work. His Physikalischer Atlas ran for four volumes from 1850-52, and was continued by Petermanns Geographische Mitteilungen. This issue of the work contains Joseph Dalton Hooker's 'Höhe des grossen Tafellandes von Tübet, und Höhe der Schneegränze im östlichen Himálaya'. It also contains an excellent map of Kumaon and Garwhal, with an article by R. Strachey 'Über die Schneelinie im Himálaya von Kumáon und Garwhál'.
