ASSOCIATION COPY; SIGNED by the Author on a special tipped-in leaf after the front free endpaper, 8vo, reddish-brown cloth with gold title on spine & ""T.C."" on front cover; archival mylar-protected pictorial dust jacket ($5.95, unclipped, 1st state); reddish-brown endpapers; black topstain; [xii], 343 pages + [1] About the Author. Most importantly, this copy comes with a deeply personal UNPUBLISHED, 8-page (roughly 3,600-word) memoir SIGNED by Mrs. Sarah Beyne née Dale; then, a girlish eye-and-ear witness to ""Consequences"" of the In Cold Blood murders. A personalized Krochs & Brentano's ""First Edition Circle"" page-marker has been Signed & Inscribed by Mrs. Sarah Dale Beyne and laid into the book. Remarkable ASSOCIATION COPY of the First Edition of Truman Capote's SIGNED ""true crime"" masterpiece in NF/VG Condition. This superior Signed family copy of In Cold Blood--belonging to Mrs. Sarah Dale Beyne--is accompanied by her 8-page unpublished memoir. It details her family's close relationship with the Herb Clutter family who had been massacred in 1959; her veterinary father and family's shocked reactions to the deaths of their very close friends; the gristly clean-up involving her father.; Thereafter, Sarah's narrative recounts the dramatic confrontation that Truman Capote precipitated when his chauffeur drove him into the Dale veterinary clinic-&-home complex in search of fresh tidbits about the murdered family. Instead, Capote found Sarah's normally kindly father was filled with righteous wrath as yet another ""Consequence"" of Capote's predatory search for morbid details. As Dr. Dale's wife and children (including 11-year old Sarah) watched anxiously from their home's windows--their burly father cursed and ejected Truman Capote from their property. Notwithstanding occasional repulses, upon publication, Capote's novel received several plaudits: notably, The New York Time's reviewer called it a ""Masterpiece."" On the other hand and echoing sentiments like those described by Sarah, prominent author Tom Wolfe was more critical of Capote's authorial propensities in an essay entitled ""Pornoviolence."" Because ""In Cold Blood"" was pathfinding as a major work of creative nonfiction--or the ""non-fiction novel"" as Truman called it--in 1966, the Mystery Writers of America honored In Cold Blood and Capote with their prestigious Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Fact Crime book. It was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, though didn't win. Overall, the book has become a classic and foundation of the modern true crime genre, as it helped redefine narrative journalism and earn Capote international acclaim. What elevates this copy beyond normal collectibility is its remarkable associations. Sarah's insider's perspective on the aftermath of the tragedy is a powerful testament to the human costs attending the creation of one of America's most celebrated works of literature. Condition: The book itself is in Superior condition: The cloth is tight, clean and bright; the pages are immaculate, though a thin line of sunning runs along the lower edge of the frront cover. The first state, unclipped dust jacket presents well and is also clean and bright but with light-to-moderate edge wear and a 3"" strip (~ 1/4"" - 1/8"" wide) missing along the rear panel's top. No foxing, inscriptions, or other markings affect the immaculate pages or endpapers. An original Krochs & Brentano's page-marker in Fine condition is included. It has the ownership signature and a notation by Mrs. Sarah Dale Beyne, the daughter of Dr. J.E. Dale, affirming that this family copy belongs to her. First Edition [Originally serialized in The New Yorker with a slightly different text.].
