From the colophon: Women in Parliament by Aristophanes a play acted at Athens 393B.C. now rendered into English by Jack Lindsay, printed at the Chiswick Press, London, MCMXXIX. #428 of 500, signed by Jack Lindsay. Bookplate of Bertha Ashton, designed by Norman Lindsay, and it appears that he has initialled the bookplate, in pencil. A history of the press The Fanfrolico Press; Satyrs, Fauns & Fine Books, by John Arnold was published by the Private Libraries Association in 2009. Here is some commentary from that history relating to this book Aristophane s play Ecclesiazusai translated by Jack Lindsay with a foreword by Edgell Rickword and four full-page and thirteen vignette drawings by Norman Lindsay. Half dark blue leather with blue cloth boards. Collated complete. This folio sized book, 59 pages is in near-fine condition. The only flaws are slight rubbing on the covers, and some slight offset on the front and back endpapers. Internally everything is fine with the text block and illustrations, no spotting or foxing on the beautiful supple leaves of paper. Norman Lindsay s drawings for this book are exquisite and some quite risqué, as normal for this famous Australian artist.
