The History and Adventures of the Renowned Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was published in Dublin by John Chambers in 1796 in four octavo volumes. This is the first Dublin edition of Tobias Smollett's English translation, one of the most widely read eighteenth-century versions of Cervantes' classic. Smollett was already a well-known novelist and historian, and his translation, though debated in terms of accuracy, influenced how readers in Britain and Ireland encountered Cervantes. His prefatory account of Cervantes' life appears at the beginning of the work. This edition is illustrated with 22 engraved plates depicting episodes from the novel. Condition: Very Good, leather binding with marbled boards, corners and hinges rubbed but solid, tight and secure binding, text complete with all plates, mild toning. Format: Octavo (8vo), four volumes. Collation: Vol. I: [lxviii], 407 pp; Vol. II: [ii], 459 pp; Vol. III: [xiii], 466 pp; Vol. IV: [ii], 459 pp. Illustrations: 22 engraved plates. Edition: First Dublin edition, 1796. References: Linsalata p. 115. Item Number (SKU): #29383. PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST.
