Book with a unique historical Civil War Association. From the library of noted Kentucky Congressman and Civil War Veteran Walter Evans (Union Army 1861-63; State representive 1871-75; U.S. Congress 1895-99) with a first person account by him of how he came into possession of this book after the battle and surrender of Fort Donelson on February 16th, 1862; also signed by him on the title page noting Hopkinsville, KY as his residence. The front endpapers feature a wonderful descriptive account of how after the battle "".the 25th Kentucky Infantry to which I belonged marched into the town of Dover near by the Fort and I picked up this book in the street. This castaway book is my only souvenir of that memorable victory over the rebel enemies of my Country (signed) Walter Evens""; Pencil and pen script from the previous owner and student Sam Porter, designating his school as the Washington Institute near Nashville Tennessee, and dated 1852-3. The battle of Fort Donelson and decisive Union victory help propel Brig. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant into the national spotlight and enabled Union advances up the Tennessee and Cumberland rivers, stopping Tennessee and Kentucky from leaving the union, and became a major upset against the Rebel army. // l + 432pp. (last couple pages of the Notes have been excised). In the original full brown calf binding with read leather title label stamped in gilt on the spine. Rubbing to the covers, signs of water damage along the spine (the book was picked up in the street after all); overall given the nature of how the book was found, it is in remarkable condition, still intact, and in Very Good condition.
