VIRGIL'S ÆNEIS, TRANSLATED INTO SCOTTISH VERSE, by the famous Gawin Douglas, Bishop of Dunkeld. A new edition. Wherein the many errors of the former are corrected, and the defects supplied, from an excellent manuscript. To which is added a large Glossary, explaining the difficult words: which may serve for a dictionary to the old Scottish language. And to the whole is prefix'd an exact account of the author's life and writings, from the best histories and records. ***First edition of Virgil published in Scotland. First edition edited by Thomas Ruddiman, and only the second edition of Gavin Douglas's Virgil, the first edition in English in 1553 (which sells for $75,000+). CONDITION: VERY GOOD+ by early 18th century standards. Collated and complete. PROVENANCE: From the Virgil Collection of Craig Kallendorf (1954 - 2023), who owned the largest private collection of antiquarian Virgil works (1,150 editions, not including Incunable books) in the world. Only a handful of prominent institutions like the British Library had larger collections. Eighth-nine of the books in his collection were the only known surviving copies, 71 only had one other known copy. He worked closely with Princeton University in helping to assemble, supplement and catalog its Junius Spencer Morgan Virgil collection. Craig Kallendorf was Professor of English and Classics at Texas A&M University. He was the author or editor of 27 books and more than 170 articles, book chapters, and reference work entries. ABOUT THE BOOK: Published in 1710 in Edinburgh, Scotland by Andrew Symson and Robert Freebairn. Second edition of the 1553 first English language edition (Middle Scots-English) of the Aneid by Gavin Douglas. This is the first printing of Virgil's Aeneid in Scotland. ""The Life of Gawin Douglas"" is by John Sage. The glossary, which is unpaginated, is by Thomas Ruddiman, who edited this new edition. Includes the additional book translated from Mapheus Vegius by Manniani and a list of subscribers (the latter often missing). In contemporary speckled full calf boards with rebacked modern spine and some professional corner restoration. Spine with six compartments separated by five gilt bordered spine bands, a modern red morocco gilt lettered spine label in compartment two. All edges speckled. Refreshed endpapers. Folio, 12.5"" x 8"". Collated and complete: [6], 19, [1], iv, [4], 486, [96] pp. IMPORTANCE The Eneados of Gavin Douglas (d. 1522) was an important step forward in the rendering into English or, in this case, early modern Scots of classical works. It was never published in his lifetime. The book was finally printed in London in 1553 as the first edition translated into English (Middle Scots English), and then not reprinted until this edition over 150-years-later. CONDITION REPORT: EXTERNALLY: VG+ antiquarian condition. Square spine, firm hinges and joints, tight pages. Rebacked spine is unrubbed and has some dust, otherwise like new. Boards are age-darkened with a textured leather surface. Corners bumped a bit. Top edge darkened. Stain on bottom edge. Lightly rubbed extremities. Looks quite beautiful on a shelf! INTERNALLY: VG+ for a book well over 300-years-old. Clean and bright endpapers with a touch of dust. Trimmed pages. Most pages are lightly toned with about 50 leaves more heavily darkened. One page with professional tear repair. Some minor signs of handling like a few bent corners, smudges and creases. Foxing on title page and some marginal foxing in other areas. No worming. No marginalia. No water dampening. A few words of pencil writing on FFEP and Craig Kallendorf's ex libris sticker. A very good+ or better antiquarian copy of the first Virgil book printed in Scotland and the second edition of Douglas's landmark work, which marked the beginning of translating ancient classics into English.
