Five volumes, the complete set, each with the ownership signature of iconoclast-environmentalist Edward Abbey on the front free endpaper. No date given, but the translator's note is dated 1894. Uncommon in this edition. Mommsen, a German who is considered one of the great classicists of the 19th century, was the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1902, and this history, originally published as three volumes in 1854-56, was specifically cited by the Nobel committee. Abbey's interest in Rome in particular is unknown, but while he served in the military in 1946-47, he was stationed in Naples, Italy. Red cloth with gilt lettering on spines. Each book very good or better with light bumping/rubbing to spine ends. A fantastic set.
