These 12 satirical scenes describe the life of the citizens of Tokyo at the end of the 19th century. The sharp satire is critical of rapid modernization; it describes a lack of manners during the end of the Edo period. The painter Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847-1915) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, working mainly for newspapers. He had a recognizable, grotesque style that became popular because of his universal pictorial language, which was inspired by Western art techniques. Original cardboard cover with original title slip. Folding album. One volume complete, 17,6 x 11,8 cm. 12 leaves. Colour woodblock. Very lightly foxing on the cover. Very slight damage on the page edge. Otherwise near fine to fine condition.
