Peele, 1731 This is the Second ed 8vo of Vegetable Statics but Vol. I only (complete in itself) of Statical Essays: 3 leaves, viii, (4), 376 pp with 19 engraved plates (Plate 17 is very well known for depicting the capture of gases). Vol. II (Statical Essays, containing Haemostaticks) first appeared in 1733. Gilt-edged leather, front hinges loose but solid. See Neville I p 578: The amended second edition of Vegetable Staticks but the first with the general title Statical Essays.The first (1727 edition) toimprove techniques for collecting and quantitating gases over water although Hales did not differentiate gases from common air.
