Published in London in 1902, this is the rare First Edition of this important and hard to find early book on the Suffragette Movement in Britain by Helen Blackburn. Helen Blackburn (25 May 1842 - 11 January 1903) was a feminist, writer and campaigner for women's rights, especially in the field of employment. Blackburn was an editor of the Englishwoman's Review magazine. She wrote books about women workers and a history of the women's suffrage movement in Britain and Ireland which became the ""standard work"". She served as secretary of the National Society for Women's Suffrage and the West of England Suffrage Society, and co-founded the Freedom of Labour Defence League. Her name appears on the plinth of the Millicent Fawcett statue in Parliament Square The book is bound in the original green cloth titled in gilt to the spine, 7.5 inches tall approx., 298 pages plus 27 illustrations and two folding charts. The covers have some mild edge rubbing wear, Internally both front and rear endpapers have been partly removed and the remainder of each endpaper has been stuck down to the pastedowns, endpapers noticeably browned, Page edges mildly browned throughout, minor corner loss to one page (pictured) and a small bump to the lower edge of a few pages (the worst of which is pictured) there is an old library stamp (pictured) to page 56, there are no further library marks present in the book.
