PROVENANCE: The Art Has Superb Provenance: *From the collection of Justin G. Schiller *Accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity by PSA/DNA BIOGRAPHY of JUSTIN SHILLER: Justin G. Schiller was fascinated with the writings of L. Frank Baum and his successors at an early age. At age 12 he lent rare material from his private collection to an exhibition celebrating the centenary of the authorâ s birth mounted at Columbia University Libraries. As an adult,ÂJustin was the owner of Americaâ s oldest continuously operating antiquarian book firm devoted to childrenâ s literature. Schiller is the worldâ s primary scholar on L. Frank Baum and a leading expert on the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, Beatrix Potter, Lewis Carroll, Dr. Seuss, Maurice Sendak and all luminaries punctuating the genreâ s evolution. Schiller is well known in the book trade and academia as the foremost promoter of the wonderful world of rare childrenâ s books and related illustration, an area of collecting he pioneered with the opening of a dedicated art gallery in 1979. â It was a magical time,â Schiller recalls when asked about his formative years â "" from age 8, when his mother gave him an Oz book (which he recalls ruining by reading in the bathtub), to a climax in 1956, the centenary of L. Frank Baumâ s birth, by which time Schiller had acquired a formidable Oz collection, mainly from scouring New Yorkâ s â Book Rowâ on lower Fourth Avenue, and developing his eye and essential dealer contacts Events that year included a comprehensive exhibition at the Columbia University library, for which 12-year-old Justin supplied rare volumes, and a CBS TV taping of actor Bert Lahr reading from a first edition ofÂThe Wizard of Oz.ÂGuess who supplied the copy? Sitting as a guest on the Cowardly Lionâ s knee was little Justin. Inspired by this event, and encouraged by Jack Snow and others, Justin wrote to everyone associated with the exhibition, proposing what became the International Wizard of Oz Club. He founded it the next year with 16 members, including L. Frank Baum Memorial Award winners Fred M. Meyer, Ruth Berman, Martin Gardner, Russell P. MacFall, and Douglas and David Greene.
